Northern recapture Premier League crown!
20 Mar 2022

Congratulations to Northern who have recaptured the Premier League title for the first time since 2014. And with Northern Ladies closing in on the Ladies' League title, it's looking good for the double.

Here is an update on the latest position at the top and bottom of each division of the leagues, with known positions highlighted and remaining key issues identified as we enter the last phase of the season.

PREMIER

Champions - Northern 1

Runners-up - Tynemouth 1

Relegated - Tynemouth 2 and Northern 2

Northern 1 regained the Premier title following a 5-0 win over Tynemouth 2 and completed their campaign with a 3-2 (14-7) victory over Newcastle University 1B, finishing with 15 wins out of 16, and 25 points ahead of former champions Tynemouth 1. Northumberland 1 (whose final result is not yet posted) are certain to have taken 3rd place with Newcastle University 1A in 4th to complete the Northumberland Cup positions.

Meanwhile Northern 2 and Tynemouth 2 are relegated, with Sunderland 1 now safely out of reach, and the outcome of the match between the bottom two at Northern on 24th March will probably determine their final order.

The top four Premier teams will compete in the Northumbria Cup at the Northumberland Club with semis on Thu 12th and Fri 13th May (7:15pm) followed by the final on Sat 14th May (5:30pm).

DIVISION 1

Promoted - Northumberland 2 (champions) and Primrose 1

Relegated - Tynemouth 3 and Northern 3

Northumberland 2 have cruised to the Division 1 title with further comfortable wins over Sunderland 2 and Benwell Hill to remain unbeaten with two matches remaining. Primrose 1 have secured second place and promotion with a 3-2 win in their final match over Tynemouth 3. Benwell Hill will finish third unless Chester-le-Street 1 can pick up sufficient points from their two matches in hand to be in contention when the two teams meet on 30th March.

At the other end, Tynemouth 3 and Northern 3 are both relegated with Westoe 2 now safe.

DIVISION 2

Promoted - Hexham 1 (champions) and Primrose 2

Relegated - Tynemouth 4 and either Northern 4 or Primrose 3

Hexham 1 have captured the Division 2 title with one match remaining and only one defeat all season, 23 points clear of Primrose 2 who secured second place and promotion with a vital 4-1 (19-4) victory over rivals Boldon 1, who with two matches remaining can no longer catch Primrose. Northumberland 4 finished in third place above Northumberland 3.

Down at the bottom, Tynemouth 4 are already relegated, but Northern 4 can still escape at the expense of Primrose 3 if they can gain 12 points or more from their final match at home to Boldon 1 on 22nd March.

DIVISION 3

Promoted - Eldon 2 (champions) and Consett 1

Relegated - Tynemouth 5 and Westoe 3

Eldon 2 won their last 7 matches to finish champions 8 points ahead of Consett 1, who themselves ended with four straight wins. Both teams finished well clear of David Lloyd Sunderland and Sunderland 3.

Tynemouth 5 are relegated along with Westoe 3, who could not catch Newbiggin 2.

DIVISION 4

Promoted - Boldon 2 (champions) and either Boldon 3 or Consett 2

Relegated - Ashington and Chester-le-Street 3

Boldon 2 have finished clear champions winning their final five matches, and Boldon 3 have all but secured second place although mathematically Consett 2 could still overtake them when the the two teams meet at Boldon on 23rd March for the final match of the season. Sunderland 4 dropped out of promotion contention by picking up only 6 points in their final match against Eldon 3.

Ashington finished bottom, and Eldon 3's 4-1 (19-6) victory over Sunderland 4 in ther final match enabled them to climb above Chester-le Street 3 by 6 points and consign Chester-le-Street to the other relegation place.

DIVISION 5

Promoted - Northern Juniors (champions) and Newcastle University 3

Wooden spoon - Consett 3

Northern Juniors won their last four matches of the season to secure the Division 5 title ahead of Newcastle University 3, despite the University winning every match since losing their opening two. Northumberland 5 with a strong run-in finished third above both Tynemouth Social and Primrose 4.

Consett 3 finished bottom, with Hexham 3 picking up enough points to move out of their reach.

LADIES DIVISION 1

Champions - Northern Ladies 1 or Newcastle University Ladies

Runners-up - Newcastle University Ladies or Northern Ladies 1

In the chase for the title, Northern Ladies 1 beat Newcastle University Ladies 3-2 (15-7) to move within 10 points of the University at the top with two matches remaining to the University's one. Northumberland Ladies have dropped out of contention following four successive defeats, but finish third above Tynemouth Ladies 1 who have secured the final Northumberland Cup place. Fifth-placed Northumbria University Ladies enter the Ladies League Cup at the semi-final stage as favourites.

LADIES DIVISION 2

Champions - Northern Ladies 2

Wooden spoon - either Tynemouth Ladies 2 or Northern Ladies 3

Northern Ladies 2 have won the Division 2 title by 18 points ahead of Primrose Ladies. Northern Ladies 3 and Tynemouth Ladies 2 will battle for 3rd and 4th places in the final match of the season on 3rd April.
