Winter Leagues - halfway update
16 Dec 2019

The Winter Leagues have reached the halfway stage, and here is an update on the current position at the top and bottom of each division.

Men's Premier: Reigning champions Tynemouth 1 are top and still unbeaten on 146 points out of a possible 160, with Newcastle University 1 breaking out of the chasing pack to occupy second place on 123 points followed by Westoe 1 on 101. In the battle against the drop amongst the 2nd teams, Northumberland 2 are marooned at the bottom without a win, and Tynemouth 2 moved comfortably clear of second-bottom Northern 2 with a win over Northumberland 1.

Division 1: Northern 3 are 18 points clear at the top but lost for the first time this season to Eldon Leisure 1, who move to fourth place only 6 points behind second-placed Westoe 2 who in turn are only a point clear of third-placed Newcastle University 2. Chester-le-Street 1 have faltered somewhat after losing to bottom team Northumberland 3, whose first win gives them some hope of staying up. In the battle to avoid the other relegation place, Primrose 1 leapfrogged 11 points clear of Newbiggin 1 by beating them 5-0 (20-4), and are now only 2 points behind Tynemouth 3 who will be looking over their shoulders but at the same time aren't completely out of promotion contention in a very tight division.

Division 2: Sunderland 2 are leading by 7 points from Benwell Hill who suffered their first defeat at the hands of Hexham 1, with Northern 4 hot on Benwell's heels just 2 points behind. Hexham's win moved them out of the bottom two, level on points with Primrose 2 and just 2 points above second-bottom Concordia 1, with winless Westoe 3 looking relegation certainties.

Division 3: Northumberland 4 are 11 points clear of Boldon 1 after Boldon's defeat at the hands of Newbiggin 2, with Tynemouth 4 a further 7 points back in third place. Second-bottom Newbiggin's recent run of form leaves them now only 11 points adrift of Consett 1, whilst Chester-le-Street 2 remain winless and favourites to go down.

Division 4: Primrose 3 have reached halfway unbeaten and 22 points clear of second-placed Dunston 1 who are themselves 20 points ahead of Northern 5 in third. Ashington are without a win at the bottom, and Hexham 2, Consett 2 and Boldon 2 are all in the mix for the other relegation place.

Division 5: Chester-le-Street 3 are 15 points clear of Scotezzi at the top with Boldon 3 and Concordia 2 some way back. Bottom team Tynemouth Social beat Northern 6 to close the gap on Dunston 2 to 4 points, whilst Westoe 4 are 6 points clear of the drop zone.

Division 6: Eldon 3 finished the half 13 points ahead of Consett 3 with Northumberland 5 a distant third. Walker are winless so far and will have their work cut out to avoid the wooden spoon, with Northern Juniors picking up 20 points at the end of the half to move above Consett 4, Hexham 3 and Primrose 4.

Ladies Premier: Northern Ladies 1B lead the table by 7 points ahead of Northumbria University Ladies. Newcastle University Ladies are a further 11 points behind after an unexpected defeat by Northumberland Ladies, who overtook Northern Ladies 1A to consign them to relegation along with Primrose Ladies and Hexham Ladies. Current champions Tynemouth Ladies are lagging in 4th place. In the second half, the remaining top five teams will play each other both home and away, so all is still to play for.

Ladies Division 2: Tynemouth Ladies 2 topped the table after turning the tables on previously-unbeaten Northern Ladies 3 in the second round of fixtures. At the other end, Tynemouth Ladies 3A finished above 3B, but these teams are merging for the second half.

The Ladies League fixtures for the second half will be generated over the next few days. In a slight change to the previous plan, in the second half all the seven teams outside the Premier - the three teams relegated from the Premier and the four Division 2 teams remaining after the Tynemouth Ladies 3 'merger' - will form Division 1 playing each other once each, either home or away.
