The Winter Leagues are now reaching the final stages, with teams in the run-in towards league titles, promotion, relegation or mid-table obscurity! Here is an update on the latest position at the top and bottom of each division.
Men's Premier: Northern 1 consolidated their position at the top with comfortable wins over both Westoe 1 (4-1) and Sunderland 1 (5-0) to lead Tynemouth 1 by 26 points with only 2 matches remaining. Victory over Tynemouth 2 on 10th March will assure Northern of their first Premier title since 2014. The race for 3rd and 4th places to fill the remaining Northumberland Cup positions still remains very tight between Northumberland 1, Newcastle University 1A and Newcastle University 1B, with much depending on the outcome of University 1B's home match with Northumberland on 10th March. Meanwhile Northern 2 and Tynemouth 2 are all but relegated, with the outcome of their match at Northern on 24th March probably determining their order in the bottom two.
Division 1: Northumberland 2 remain unbeaten after 14 matches with straightforward wins over Tynemouth 3 and Westoe 2, and are now certainties for promotion with a 15-point lead and 2 matches in hand over 2nd-placed Primrose 1. Newbiggin 1 have made an impressive late run into 3rd with 5 straight wins including a 3-2 (16-9) victory over 4th-placed Benwell Hill, but Benwell remain only 10 points behind Newbiggin with two matches in hand, but their 31-point gap to Primrose with three matches remaining to Primrose's two looks too much to make up. At the other end, Tynemouth 3 are certainties for the drop and Northern 3 look unlikely to escape as Eldon 1 and Westoe 2 have done enough to survive.
Division 2: Hexham 1 have extended their lead at the top to 20 points with a match in hand following a telling 4-1 (17-9) win over 2nd-placed Primrose 2. Primrose then surprisingly lost 2-3 (8-16) to Northumberland 4, leaving the door open perhaps for a late challenge for 2nd place by Boldon 1, who are 15 points behind Primrose with three matches left to Primrose's two. Primrose host Boldon on 15th March in a potential promotion decider. Down at the bottom, Tynemouth 4 are already relegated, but Northern 4 still have an outside chance of catching Primrose 3 following a 4-1 (18-7) win over their rivals.
Division 3: Congratulations to Eldon 2 who have secured promotion with one match remaining, and lead the table by 23 points over Consett 1, who have a match in hand. Consett look to have consolidated 2nd place having benefitted over the season from three 20-point walkovers in their favour (two against Westoe 3), whilst Sunderland 3 should overtake David Lloyd Sunderland, one point ahead of them in 3rd, as they have a match in hand. Tynemouth 5 are relegated and Westoe 3 are certainties to join them, having received a 20-point deduction for conceding another fixture, with Newbiggin 2 doing enough to escape.
Division 4: Boldon 2 have increased their lead at the top, 37 points ahead of Sunderland 4 in 2nd. However Consett 2 and Boldon 3 remain in contention, 22 and 24 points respectively behind Sunderland 4 with two matches in hand on them. At the bottom, Ashington are relegated, but Chester-le-Street 3's back-to-back wins against both Ashington and Eldon 3 gives them a good chance of escaping at the expense of Eldon 3.
Division 5: Northern Juniors suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of their nearest rivals Newcastle University 3 by 4-1 (17-7), componded by the fact that the match doubled up as a League Cup B quarter final. However University 3 still trail Juniors by 26 points, albeit with a match in hand. Northumberland 5 and Tynemouth Social will have to settle for 3rd and 4th places. Consett 3 remain bottom, with Hexham 3 pulling away following wins over both Alnwick and Consett 3.
Ladies Division 1: With the result of last week's Newcastle University Ladies v Northern Ladies 1 match still outstanding, Newcastle University Ladies lead 2nd-placed Northumberland Ladies by 18 points, following Northumberland's shock 1-4 (10-17) defeat by Northumbria University Ladies. Northern Ladies are a further 20 points behind in 3rd but remain in contention for the title with 2 matches in hand on both of their rivals, and there are likely to be plenty of twists and turns still ahead. Tynemouth Ladies 1 have consolidated 4th place and a Northumberland Cup slot ahead of Northumbria University Ladies, who now enter the Ladies League Cup at the semi-final stage as favourites.
Ladies Division 2: Northern Ladies 2 lead by 26 points with one match remaining on 14th March against 2nd-placed Primrose Ladies, who can close the gap with their match in hand against Northern Ladies 3 beforehand. Northern Ladies 3 and Tynemouth Ladies 2 will battle for 3rd and 4th places.
