League Cups latest
06 Mar 2023

Only one 1st round tie remains to be played in the Men's League Cup A, with most quarter finals still to play, whilst Men's League Cup B has already reached the semi-finals stage.

In League Cup A (for each club's highest team in Divisions 1 to 3):

There are no clear favourites in this year's competition, as it's extremely competitive between the four teams at the top of Division 1 who are all capable of beating each other, and the top two DIvision 2 teams are also still in the mix.

Current Division 1 leaders Tynemouth 2 easily overcame Concordia of Division 2 by 5-0 to progress to the quarter finals where they repeated the 5-0 scoreline against Hexham 1, who remain bottom of Division 1, in a league and cup double header.

Newbiggin 1, currently in the Division 1 relegation playoff place, repeated last year's 1st round win over Sunderland 2 by the same scoreline of 3-2. They now have the task (on 28th March) of travelling to Division 2 front-runners Northumberland 3, who received a bye into the quarter finals and will be hoping to emulate their 2nd team's triumph in last year's Cup A competition.

Division 2 promotion certainties Boldon 1 despatched Northumberland Ladies of Division 3 by 5-0 in the 1st round, but on 27th March they face a challenging tie at home to Northern 2 who knocked out Division 2 bottom team Consett 1 by 5-0 and remain in the hunt for promotion to the Premier.

The last quarter-final tie on 5th April will be an all-Division 1 affair, between the winners of Westoe 2 v Primrose 2 (playing on 8th March) and the winners of promotion-chasing Chester-le-Street 1 v Eldon 1 (playing on 27th March). Both 1st round ties will be played as double headers.

In League Cup B (for each club's highest team in Divisions 4 and 5):

Division 4 champions-elect Newcastle University 3, who are favourites to retain the trophy they won last year, received a walkover through to the semi-finals from Division 5 high-flyers Boldon 4, who narrowly defeated Northumberland 5 of Division 4  by 3-2 in the 1st round.

Sunderland 4, lying mid-table in Division 4, have battled through to the semi-finals after beating Chester-le-Street 3 and then Consett 2 both by the same 3-2 scoreline.

Division 5 leaders Hexham 3 (who beat Alnwick 4-1 in the 1st round) edged past Tynemouth Social 3-2 in a closely-contested league and cup double header.

In an all-Northern affair and Division 4 double header, Northern 5 faced a tough task against already-promoted Northern Juniors 1, the Cup second favourites. After both teams had comfortable 5-0 wins in the 1st round, against Tynemouth 5 and Eldon 3 respectively, Juniors continued their winning form with a 5-0 victory over their club rivals.

In the only 1st round tie in the Ladies' League CupTynemouth Ladies 2 recwived a walkover from Newcastle University Ladies 2, and now play Northern Ladies 3 in the semi-final. Primrose Ladies will take on the 5th-placed Division 1 team - likely to be Northern Ladies 2 - in the other semi-final.
