Winter Leagues - update
18 Mar 2023

The Winter Leagues are now almost complete, with teams in the run-in towards league titles, promotion, relegation or the playoffs! Here is an update on the latest position at the top and bottom of each division.

Premier Division - Westoe 1 are the only team this season to have beaten Northumberland 1, and they have now done it twice! However it doesn't look to be quite enough to catch Northumberland at the top. Northumberland only need to beat Sunderland 1 by any score in their final match to pick up their first Premier title since 2013, as Westoe still trail them by 46 points with only three matches left, and look like they will have to settle for second place, which represents a marked improvement on last season's 6th-placed finish. Newcastle University 1A  and last year's champions Northern 1 have secured third and fourth places respectively to complete the Northumbria Cup line-up. Benwell Hill are relegated but have enjoyed their first season in the top flight. The battle to avoid the other automatic relegation place in favour of the playoffs is nicely poised - Northumberland 2 with one match remaining (against Benwell Hill) hold a 10-point advantage over Premier debutants Primrose 1, who have two matches left (against Tynemouth and Westoe).

Division 1 - Chester-le-Street 1 with two matches remaining are closing on Tynemouth 2 for the title after Tynemouth slipped up against Sunderland 2. Tynemouth are 17 points ahead with only one match left. Eldon 1 are still in the hunt in third place and travel to Newbiggin and then to Chester-le-Street for the final match of the season on 27th March which will decide the automatic promotion and playoff places. Hexham 1 are relegated but Newbiggin's resurgence has faltered and they need to overturn Westoe 2's 12-point advantage in the final round of matches to escape the other automatic relegation place. Westoe themselves will hope to avoid the relegation playoffs by overtaking Primrose 2 who are 10 points ahead of them. Sunderland 2 are now safe.

Division 2 - Congratulations to Northumberland 3 who have finished unbeaten as champions, and to Boldon 1 who are also promoted, both teams being well clear of the chasing pack. Northern 3 have secured the promotion playoff place ahead of Tynemouth 3. At the other end, Consett 1 are relegated along with Sunderland 3, but only 3 points separate three teams, Concordia 1, Primrose 3 and Eldon 2, who are all trying to escape the relegation playoff place in the final round of fixtures.

Division 3 - Congratulations to champions Boldon 2 (their second successive title) and second-placed Northern 4 (relegated from Division 2 last year) who are both promoted by a substantial margin. Northumberland 4 boosted their promotion playoff chances with a narrow win over rivals Hexham 2. Tynemouth 4 are relegated, and Boldon 3's win over Chester-le-Street 2 gives them a 13-point advantage over them in the battle to avoid the other automatic relegation spot, but if Boldon 3 defeat Northumberland Ladies by a margin of 9 points or more they send Ladies into the relegation playoffs and with Chester-le-Street 2 playing Hexham 2 there are still many permutations in a very tight mid-section of the table.

Division 4 - Congratulations to both Newcastle University 3 and Northern Juniors 1 who are both promoted for the second successive year, with the University's recent 3-2 win over Juniors maintaining their unbeaten record and making them almost certain champions. Consett 2 look to have the edge for the promotion playoff place, with Northern 5 faltering.  Meanwhile at the bottom, Tynemouth 5 are relegated with Northumberland 5 likely to join them and Chester-le-Street 3 in the relegation playoff place once their fixture backlog has been cleared.

Division 5 - Hexham 3 are six points clear at the top ahead of Boldon 4 going into the last round of fixtures, with both teams now sure of promotion. Hexham beat Tynemouth Social who will now have to settle for third place and the promotion playoff. At the other end, Consett Development are heading for the wooden spoon despite recording their first win of the season over 2nd-bottom Ashington.

Ladies’ Division 1 - With three matches to go, Newcastle University Ladies 1 have all but wrapped up their first title after back-to-back wins over second-placed Tynemouth Ladies 1, followed by a comfortable win over former champions Northern Ladies 1 in third place. Northumberland Ladies 1 look almost certain to take the final Ladies’ Northumbria Cup spot, with Northern Ladies 2 finishing fifth and dropping into the Ladies' League Cup.

Ladies’ Division 2 - Tynemouth Ladies 2 have wrapped up the title ahead of Northern Ladies 3, no matter how well Northern do in their final match against Primrose Ladies. Tynemouth were aided by a walkover against bottom team Newcastle University Ladies 2, who unfortunately could not field a team for their final match due to the Easter holidays.
