Cup latest
11 Mar 2024

Here is the latest position in the Northumbria and League Cup competitions:

Men's Northumbria Cup (for top 4 Premier teams)

The semi-finals on Friday 10th May will involve cup-holders and 5-times winners Westoe 1, reigning Premier champions Northumberland 1, Northern 1 (2021/22 league and cup double-winners) and either Northumberland 2 or Sunderland 1. Northumberland 1 and Northern 1 will be in opposite halves of the draw, but they are currently neck-and-neck at the top of the Premier so until that contest is resolved the semi-final draw cannot be determined.

Ladies' Northumbria Cup (for top 4 Division 1 teams)

2022/23 league and cup double-winners Newcastle University Ladies 1A are odds-on favourites to retain their league title, whilst 2021/22 league and cup double-winners Northern Ladies 1 will be in the opposite half of the draw for the semi-finals on Thursday 9th May. Their opponents will be either Northumberland Ladies 1 or Newcastle University Ladies 1B, depending on their final 3rd or 4th placings.

Men's League Cup A [for Div 1 to 3 teams]

We have now reached the quarter-final stage of this competition.

In the only all-Division 1 clash, the cup favourites Northumberland 3, unbeaten all season, host relegation certainties Westoe 1 in what looks like a pretty one-sided encounter, based on their earlier meetings this season.

Newbiggin 1, the unbeaten runaway Division 2 leaders, entertain Primrose 1, lying mid-table in Division 1, who will not be relishing their trip to the seasiders.

Newcastle University 3 have already secured their third successive promotion to move up to Division 2 next season, and they host Northern 2, currently 4th in Division 1 and chasing a promotion playoff place, in what should be a closely-contested tie.

Finally in an all-Division 3 encounter, Northern Juniors 1, who are unbeaten and (like Newcastle University 3) already promoted for the third successive season, should not be unduly troubled by their visit to Chester-le-Street 2, who have failed to make much impression on Juniors in either of their league matches this season.

Quarter final line-up [division in brackets]:

  • Northumberland 3 [1] v Westoe 2 [1]
  • Newbiggin 1 [2] v Primrose 1 [1]
  • Newcastle University 3 [3] v Northern 2 [1]
  • Chester-le-Street 2 [3] v Northen Juniors 1 [3]

Semi-final line-up (Wed 8th May):

  • Northumberland 3 or Westoe 2 v Newbiggin 1 or Primrose 1
  • Newcastle University 3 or Northern 2 v Chester-le-Street 2 or Northen Juniors 1

Men's League Cup B [for Div 4 & 5 teams]

This competition is also at the quarter-final stage.

In one of the two all-Division 4 ties, promotion contenders Northern 5 host relegation favourites Hexham 3 for what looks like a straightforward win for Northern, based on the results of their earlier meetings this season.

It could be close between Benwell Hill 2, one of the Division 5 front runners, and Northumberland 5 who are pressing for a Division 4 promotion playoff place.

In the only all-Division 5 encounter, promotion contenders Concordia 2 entertain table-toppers Newcastle University 4 in an eagerly-anticipated league and cup double-header on 14th March.

The other all-Division 4 tie sees promotion playoff contenders Chester-le-Street 3 host table toppers and cup favourites Tynemouth 3, who won both of their league matches emphatically, so will be expecting to progress through to the semi-finals.

Quarter final line-up [division in brackets]:

  • Northern 5 [4] v Hexham 3 [4]
  • Benwell Hill 2 [5] v Northumberland 5 [4]
  • Concordia 2 [5] v Newcastle University 4 [5] Thu 14th March
  • Chester-le-Street 3 [4] v Tynemouth 3 [4]

Semi-final line-up (Tue 7th May):

  • Northern 5 or Hexham 3 v Benwell Hill 2 or Northumberland 5
  • Concodria 2 or Newcastle University 3 v Chester-le-Street 3 or Tynemouth 3

Ladies' League Cup (for 5th and 6th-placed Division 1 teams and all Division 2 teams)

In the first quarter-final tie, Newcastle University Ladies 4 host slight cup favourites Tynemouth Ladies 1 of Division 1, who will expect to win comfortably.

Northern Ladies 3 knocked out Tynemouth Ladies 2 by the narrowest of margins, drawing 2-2 but winning 8-6 on games.

Northumberland Ladies 2 had no such trouble against Newcastle University Ladies 3, running out 4-0 winners.

The final quarter-final tie is an all-Northern affair between Ladies 4 and cup second-favourites Ladies 2 of Division 1, with Ladies 2 clear favourites to go through to the semi-finals.

Quarter final line-up / results [division in brackets]:

  • Newcastle University Ladies 4 [2] v Tynemouth Lades 1 [1]
  • Northern Ladies 3 [2] beat Tynemouth Ladies 2 [2]  2-2 (8-6)
  • Northumberland Ladies 2 [2] beat Newcastle University Ladies 3 [2]  4-0
  • Northern Ladies 4 [2] v Northern Ladies 2 [1]

Semi-final line-up (Mon 6th May):

  • Newcastle University Ladies 4 or Tynemouth Lades 1 v Northern Ladies 3
  • Northumberland Ladies 2 v Northern Ladies 4 or Northern Ladies 2

All the Cup semi finals will be held at the Northumberland Club from Monday 6th to Friday 10th May, culminating in the Cup Finals and Presentation Night on Sunday 12th May. (Please note that these are revised dates.)
