2024/25 LEAGUES - FULL ROUND-UP
03 Apr 2025

Congratulations to Northern and Newcastle University Ladies, who have both won their respective Men's and Ladies' League titles!

Here is the final position at the top and bottom of each division of the leagues, with the divisional playoffs still to come!

PREMIER

Champions - Northern 1

Runners-up - Newcastle University 1B

Relegation playoff - Newcastle University 1A

Relegated - Boldon 1 and Sunderland 1

Player of the Division - Mark Dinsley (Northern 1)

Northern 1 secured their first Premier title since 2021/22 finishing on 305 points, 17 points clear of second-placed Newcastle University 1B. The decisive result was Northern's 4-1 (18-5) win against Uni 1B on 27th February.

Northern's squad of Cai Younger, Andrew Shipley, Justin Dixon, David Jackson, Mark Dinsley and Craig Dowie proved too strong, with Justin and Mark remaining unbeaten throughout the season, and Mark finishing as Player of the Division. Newcastle University 1B's squad of Liam Gutcher, Ross Jowsey, Dominic Cox, Joe Elliott and Matthew Harrison, ably supported by Daniel Sarkissian, Matthew Davidson and Sam Rudd, were never far behind but will have to settle for a very commendable runners-up spot.

Last season's champions Northumberland split their strength amongst their three Premier teams, with 1B and 1C finishing in third and fourth places respectively to claim the remaining Northumberland Cup positions.

Tynemouth 1, Northumberland 1A and Westoe 1 occupied 5th, 6th and 7th places, and Newcastle University 1A had a disappointing campaign, finishing 8th and facing a relegation playoff against Northern 2.

Boldon 1, after three promotions in the last four seasons, found life tough in the top flight, and were relegated automatically along with Sunderland 1, who had enjoyed five successive seasons in the Premier.

The top four Premier teams will compete in the Men's Northumbria Cup at the Northumberland Club with semis on Fri 11th April (7:15pm) followed by the final on Sat 12th April (5:30pm).

DIVISION 1

Promoted - Chester-le-Street 1 (champions) and Eldon 1

Promotion playoff - Northern 2

Relegation playoff - Westoe 2

Relegated - Sunderland 2 and Primrose 2

Player of the Division - Mark Steven (Eldon 1)

Chester-le-Street 1 clinched the Division 1 title for the second time in three years, regaining their Premier status after relegation last season. Chester-le-Street's top player was Steve Fountain with 13 wins from 14 appearances. They finished 12 points ahead of runners-up Eldon 1, who have achieved promotion to the Premier for the first time, after knocking at the door for the last two seasons. Eldon boasted the Player of the Division in Mark Steven, who won 15 out of his 16 matches.

Northern 2 finished in third place for the second season in succession, and this time face University 1A in the playoffs. Northern's comprehensive 5-0 (20-6) victory over Primrose 1 in early March allowed them to leapfrog over Primrose, who fell short of the playoffs by just 3 points.

At the other end, Sunderland 2 and winless Primrose 2 were relegated, with Westoe 2 (who were reprieved last season) facing a playoff battle to retain their Division 1 status.

DIVISION 2

Promoted - Northern Juniors 1 (champions) and Newcastle University 3

Promotion playoff - Northumberland 4

Relegation playoff - Northern 3

Relegated - Sunderalnd 3 and Primrose 3

Player of the Division - Sam Tufton (Northern Juniors 1)

Unbelievably, this is a fourth successive promotion for both Northern Juniors 1 and Newcastle University 3 - a great achievement!

Both teams finished on 289 points, but Juniors clinched the title by conceding three fewer games than the University over the course of the season. Juniors remained unbeaten, with Sam Tufton claiming not only Player of the Division but also overall League Player of the Season, winning all his 15 matches 3-0. Over the last three seasons, Sam has won all his 36 matches, dropping only 2 games in the process, a fantastic achievement! Duncan Rutherford and Aidan Mahoney also remained unbeaten for a second successive season.

In another repeat of last season, the University's only two defeats came at Juniors' hands by 3-2 on both occasions, and their Ben Tudor, Miles Maguire and Will Digby also remained unbeaten. This season's promotion playoff spot went to Northumberland 4 who finished comfortably ahead of Hexham 1.

Down at the bottom, Sunderland 3 and Primrose 3 were automatically relegated, and Northern 3 face a tough task in the relegation playoff against in-form challengers Chester-le-Street 2.

DIVISION 3

Promoted - Northumberland 5 (champions) and Consett 1

Promotion playoff - Chester-le-Street 2

Relegation playoff - Northern 4

Relegated - Eldon 3 and Boldon 3

Player of the Division - Tom Beresford (Chester-le-Street 2)

Champions Northumberland 5's 4-1 (17-6) victory over runners-up Consett 1 in early March was the key result in deciding the title for Northumberland by 9 points. Consett just held off thrid-placed Chester-le-Street 2, who won their last 9 matches to close the gap to just 3 points, and must fancy their chances against Northern 3 in the promotion playoff, especially with Player of the Division Tom Beresford (16 wins from 16) in their ranks!

Eldon 3 and Boldon 3 struggled to find any consistency and were duly relegated, leaving Northern 4 to face the uncertainty of the relegation playoff.

DIVISION 4

Promoted - Benwell Hill (champions) and Newcastle University 4

Promotion playoff - Chester-le-Street 3

Relegation playoff - Consett 2

Relegated - Boldon 4 and Tynemouth Social

Player of the Division - Richie Mackett (Benwell Hill)

Champions Benwell Hill proved too strong for their Division 4 opponents, with their top three players Ian Charlton, Jake Mottram (who remained unbeaten) and Richie Mackett all in contention for Player of the Division, which just went to Richie on his greater overall contribution to the team results. Runners-up Newcastle University 4 were just 14 points behind, having closed the gap with a 3-2 (16-8) win over Benwell in the latter stages. This is a second successive promotion for University 4, whose Isaac Tindale won all his 12 matches dropping just a single game.

Chester-le-Street 3 finished a distant third, but well ahead of Northumberland 6 in fourth place, and will go into the promotion playoff against Northern 4.

Boldon 4 and Tynemouth Social were relegated, and Consett 2 must now overcome challengers Primrose 4 in the relegation playoff to maintain their Division 4 status.

DIVISION 5

Promoted - Northern Juniors 2 (champions) and Tynemouth 4

Promotion playoff - Primrose 4

Wooden spoon - Tynemouth 5

Player of the Division - Chris Pringle (Newbiggin)

Northern Juniors 2 powered to the Division 5 title, with Tynemouth 4 finding their form after a rocky start to clinch the runners-up spot. Primrose 4 finished comfortably above both Consett Development and Northern 5 to claim a promotion playoff place against Consett 2.

Chris Pringle (Newbiggin 2) was Player of the Division with 14 wins from 16 matches, fractionally ahead of Juniors' unbeaten players Charllie Armstrong and Euan Wayman (both 13 from 13).

The wooden spoon went to newbies Tynemouth 5, who remained winless but enjoyed the experience of team squash!

LADIES' DIVISION 1

Champions - Newcastle University Ladies 1

Runners-up - Northumberland Ladies 1

Player of the Division - Kate Maxwell-Armstrong (Newcastle University Ladies 1)

In the Ladies' League, Newcastle University Ladies 1 retained the title with 277 points, well ahead of runners-up Northumberland Ladies 1 on 225. The Uni squad of Emma Turnbull, Emily King, Mia Smith, Kate Maxwell-Armstrong, Zoe Shipsey and Katherine Jarvis lost only two matches all season, with Emma, Emily and Kate remaining unbeaten, and Kate finishing as Player of the Division. Northumberland Ladies' Beth Irwin-Jones also remained unbeaten.

Northern Ladies 1 and Tynemouth Ladies 1 finished 3rd and 4th respectively and take up the remaining Northumbria Cup places.

The top four Division 1 teams will compete in the Ladies' Northumbria Cup at the Northumberland Club with semi-finals on Thu 10th April (both 7:15pm), followed by the final on Sat 12th April (5:30pm).

LADIES' DIVISION 2

Champions - Northern Ladies 2

Runners-up - Primrose Ladies

Player of the Division - Katherine Palmer (Northern Ladies 2)

Northern Ladies 2 won the Division 2 title with 6 wins out of 6 and 115 points, comfortably ahead of ruinners-up Primrose Ladies on 69. Northern's Katherine Palmer picked up the Player of the Division award with six straight 3-0 wins.
