NORTHERN BLUES CLAIM SUMMER CROWN

In the first semi-final, the top seeds Northumberland C took on 4th-placed Benwell Hill. Benwell’s Jake Mottram gave his team hope of defeating the league’s standout team with a 3-0 win v Mike Paul, but Northumberland took the remaining 3 matches to secure their spot in the finals, despite a valiant effort from Ian Charlton against premier player Alex Cahill at 1.

In the other semi, defending champions [2] Eldon faced [3] Northern Blues. Northern took full advantage of a weakened Eldon team, who were without their top 3 players, and stormed into the final with a clean sweep of 3-0 wins.

In the final, Charlie Armstrong gave Northern an early lead with a 3-0 win over Toby James at no.4, but Northumberland’s captain Martin Jolley quickly levelled the tie, beating Jon Ward 3-0 at 3, putting all the pressure on the final 2 games! At 2, Mike Paul (Northumberland) faced Ben Tudor, while Alex Cahill was up against Northern’s Dylan Newton, with the opening game of each match going in Northern’s favour. Alex then won an important sudden-death death in game 2, but it was all in vain as Ben completed his 3-0 victory over Mike to seal the title for Northern, their 1st ever Summer League title!
