Men's League - update
24 Mar 2017

With just two weeks of league action remaining, here are the main highlights and issues in the Men's League:

Premier Division

Newcastle University have clinched the Premier Division title, despite losing for only the second time this season to Northern this week. This is the University's first title since their return to the top flight in 2013. Tynemouth 1 (champions in the previous two seasons) have finished runners-up with Northumberland needing only 8 points next Thursday against Northern to guarantee a third-place finish. Westoe's home game with Northern on 6th April will decide who secures the last Northumbria Cup place. At the bottom, Tynemouth 2 are down, and Sunderland's away game against Newbiggin next Thursday and delayed 'home' game against an injury-hit Alnwick team on 6th April may give them an escape route at Newbiggin's expense.

Division 1

Northumberland Juniors and Northern 2 should have just enough left in the tank to overhaul Newcastle University 2 at the top and clinch the two promotion places, with the championship title still up for grabs. Sunderland 2 are relegated, with Northern 3's away game against Concordia 1 (6th April) probably deciding the other relegation spot between these two teams.

Division 2

Congratulations to champions Newcastle University 3, who are the only team throughout the League to remain unbeaten for the entire season. Tynemouth 3 beat promotion rivals Primrose 1 convincingly last week and now need just 8 points from their final game to finish as runners-up. Consett 1 are relegated, but Chester-le-Street 2 could still avoid the drop if they can beat Northumberland 3 at home on 29th March, with Westoe 2 looking in some trouble now.

Division 3

Washington 1 and Benwell Hill have the two promotion places wrapped up, despite Benwell's shock defeat to bottom team Northumberland 4 this week. With one game to go, Washington now look to have the edge in the race for the championship title. Northumberland 4 and Eldon Leisure 2 are confirmed as relegated.

Division 4

Consett 2 are promoted, with Boldon 1 needing a win over Hexham 2 this week to join them and become favourites to clinch the championship. Ashington 1 are favourites for the drop, although Westoe's convincing win over Northern 5 last week now means that either of these two teams, or even those just above them, could fill the other relegation place.

Division 5

Newcastle University 4 are promoted, with Primrose 2 ready to take advantage of any slip-ups by likely champions Concordia 2 in their last two matches. Northern 6 are relegated with Dunston 2 having to beat Northern Juniors 2 at home on 5th April to give Consett 3 a nervous final game at Tynemouth 5.

Division 6

Northumberland 5 are promoted and odds-on champions, with Eldon Leisure 3 looking to have the edge over Dunston 3 for the other promotion place. Down at the bottom, Westoe 4 are already relegated, and Ashington 2 have withdrawn.

Division 7

Newbiggin 3 are going up as champions, with Washington 2 needing only 4 points at home to bottom team Consett 5 to join them, and Boldon 3 chasing Alnwick 2 for the likely third promotion place. Consett 5 thought they had at last secured their first ever win, 3-2 against Northumberland 6, but realised they had played out of order and had to concede their three winning ties to lose the match 5-0!
