12 Apr 2018

Here are the headlines in the Men's League, which has now concluded:

Premier Division

Congratulations to Newcastle University 1 who duly retained their Premier Division title, with a 5-0 win in their final match against Newbiggin 1 to leave Northern 1 as runners-up, 12 points behind. Meanwhile Tynemouth 1 secured the 8 points they needed against 3rd-placed Westoe 1 in their final match to finish 4th and secure a Northumberland Cup place just ahead of Northumberland 1, who suffered a 5-point penalty for insufficient 2nd half appearances by one of their top-5 players. At the bottom, Northumberland 2 and Sunderland 1 were both relegated after one and two seasons respectively in the top flight.

Division 1

Newcastle University 2 also secured their divisional title, finishing 18 points ahead of Chester-le-Street 1 who will join them in next season's Premier. Tynemouth 2 finished third, a further 12 points behind Chester-le-Street. Northern 3 were relegated, along with Eldon Leisure 1 who finished 6 points adrift of Concordia 1.

Division 2

Westoe 2 took the title by one point over Washington, who narrowly defeated winless Chester-le-Street 2 to secure a second promotion in successive seasons, with Hexham 1 finishing third. Chester-le-Street 2 were relegated along with Northern Juniors 1, who despite their last-match victory over Hexham 1 finished three points short of both Sunderland 2 and Primrose 1 in a very competitive division.

Division 3

Boldon 1 finished champions with a third successive promotion, 11 points clear of also-promoted Dunston 1. Third-placed Tynemouth 4 were well short of Dunston despite the satisfaction of a final-match victory over them. Tynemouth Social and Consett 2 were both relegated, with Northumberland Ladies 20 points clear.

Division 4

Primrose 2 and Westoe 3 are both promoted, Primrose for the second successive season, beating Westoe in the final match 15-7 to finish as clear champions, with Hexham 2 in third place. At the bottom, Scotezzi have been relegated, with Northern 5 beating Eldon Leisure 2 in their final match 17-7 for both teams to escape and send Sunderland 3 down.

Division 5

Ashington 1 are promoted back to Division 4 as champions at the first attempt, with Northumberland 5 joining them for their second succesive promotion, and Boldon 2 some way back in third. Walker (who lost 10-17 to Tynemouth 5 on 27th March) are relegated along with Northern Juniors 2, who finished 3 points below Dunston 2 following Consett 3's escape with a final-match 17-7 victory over Walker.

Division 6

Primrose 3 are promoted as champions in their first season, despite their first defeat of the campaign by Concordia 3 who secured the other promotion place ahead of Northern 6. Down at the bottom, Consett 4 are relegated along with Westoe 4, well adrift of Eldon Leisure 3.

Division 7

Chester-le-Street 4 have clinched the title, with Boldon 3 also promoted as runners-up, and Sunderland 4 having to settle for third place. After re-forming, Ashington 2 have struggled all season, finishing without a win.
