Winter leagues - half-season update
19 Dec 2018

The Winter Leagues have now reached the half-season stage, with all teams having completed their first half fixtures. Here is a quick update on the latest position at the top of each division, and important fixtures coming up.

Men's Premier: Tynemouth 1 are 9 points clear at the top although both Newcastle University 1A and Northern 1 remain in contention. The second half clashes between these three teams all take place in March in what are likely to be title deciders, starting with Tynemouth at home to University 1A on Thu 7th March.

Division 1: It's neck and neck at the top with Sunderland 1 just edging it by 2 points over Tynemouth 2, with Northumberland 2 a further point behind. Northumberland host both Sunderland and Tynemouth, on Wed 30th January and Wed 13th February respectively.

Division 2: Northern 3 have a commanding 23-point lead over Primrose 1, followed by Eldon Leisure 1 and Northumberland 3; Northern travel to Eldon on Wed 9th January, and Primrose then host Eldon on Tue 15th January and Northern on Tue 5th February.

Division 3: Westoe 3 and Primrose 2 are level on points at the top with Westoe ahead on matches won. Northern Juniors 1 beat Primrose in the final match of the first half but have incurred a 5-point penalty so remain 7 points behind the leaders. Northern 4 are still in contention in 4th place.

Division 4: It's a two-horse race between Northumberland 4 and Chester-le-Street 3, with Northumberland having a 4-point lead at halfway and no-one else in the frame. Since losing to Chester-le-Street in their opening fixture, Northumberland are unbeaten and will be seeking revenge in the return fixture at home on Wed 9th January.

Division 5: Tynemouth 5 and Boldon 2 have identical points at halfway, with Tynemouth ahead on matches won. Sunderland 3 are closing on the leaders, just 8 points behind with Primrose 3 a further 2 points adrift. Primrose will be trying to close the gap when they host Tynemouth and Boldon on Wed 16th and Wed 30th January respectively, then Boldon host Tynemouth on Mon 11th February seeking to reverse their narrow first-half defeat, and Primrose travel to Sunderland on Wed 13th February.

Division 6: Chester-le-Street 4 have a 10-point lead over Northern 6 at halfway, with Boldon 3 a further 4 points behind. Northern will seek to use home advantage to turn the tables on Chester-le-Street on Fri 1st March.

Division 7: It couldn't be much closer at the top with Westoe 4 leading by a single point from Hexham 3, then Boldon 4 and Northumberland 5 a further 5 points behind, and Sunderland 4 coming into contention just 7 points behind them in 5th place, having beaten Westoe in their final match of the half. Anything could happen in the second half!

Ladies Premier: It's absolute level-pegging at the top of the Premier between Tynemouth Ladies 1 and Northern Ladies 1A after Tynemouth Ladies' thumping victory over Northern Ladies 1A in their final match of the half to overtake them by the narrowest of margins, with just one fewer game conceded! Northern Ladies 1B lie a further 6 points behind the leaders in 3rd place. Northern Ladies 1A host Tynemouth on Wed 30th January before a likely final showdown at Tynemouth on Thu 14th March.

Ladies Division 1:

This division starts in January with the two bottom teams from the Premier, Northumberland Ladies 1 and Primrose Ladies 1, and the two top teams from Division 2, Northern Ladies 3 and Hexham Ladies. Northumberland must be considered favourites for the title at this stage.

Ladies Division 2: Northern Ladies 3 finished unbeaten, 16 points clear of Hexham Ladies. Both teams are promoted to Division 1, leaving Eldon Leisure Ladies favourites for the Division 2 title, 9 points ahead of Tynemouth Ladies 2.
