Winter leagues - latest update
09 Mar 2019

Here is an update on the latest position at the top and bottom of each division of the leagues, and important fixtures coming up.

Men's Premier: Tynemouth 1 took a significant step towards the title with a hard-fought 3-2 (18-10) victory over nearest rivals Newcastle University 1A to extend their lead to 34 points having played one match more. Northern 1 had a narrow 3-2 (17-8) win over Westoe to close the gap on University 1A to just 2 points, but to have any chance of the title, Northern have to win their last three matches, away to Newbiggin 1 on 14th March, then at home to University 1A on 20th March, and finally away to Tynemouth by a substantial margin on 21st March. At the bottom, Chester-le-Street 1 are relegated and Newbiggin 1 have to make up 9 points on Northern 2 in their last two matches to avoid the other relegation place.

Division 1: Sunderland 1 have drawn 31 points clear at the top following a 4-1 (19-8) victory over main rivals Tynemouth 2 which was closer than the scoreline suggests. Tynemouth have a match in hand on Sunderland and Northumberland 2, 20 points behind Tynemouth, have a further match in hand and host both Sunderland and Tynemouth on 11th March and 3rd April respectively, needing to win both matches to stand any chance of promotion. Washington look most likely to join Concordia 1 in going down, with Tynemouth 3 now 8 points ahead of Washington.

Division 2: Northern 3's promotion will be confirmed if they pick up just one more point in their last three matches. Primrose 1 are 33 points ahead of Eldon Leisure 1 (who have a match in hand), with no other teams in promotion contention. Primrose host Northern on 12th March in a match that should confirm the title for Northern. Meanwhile Tynemouth 4 are certainties to go down and Boldon 1's solitary point this week against Eldon means that Benwell Hill are only 5 points behind Boldon with a match in hand, so the match between the two teams on 20th March will be pivotal.

Division 3: Primrose 2 have moved to the top of the table by 13 points over Northern 4 who have a match in hand, and by 15 points over Westoe 3 who have two matches in hand. Northern's final fixture at home to Westoe on 2nd April will settle the promotion and title issues. Northumberland Ladies are relegated, with Hexham 2 almost certain to join them.

Division 4: It's still a two-horse race for the title between Chester-le-Street 3 and Northumberland 4, with Chester-le-Street currently leading by 22 points having played a match more than Northumberland, who have an easier run-in. Tynemouth Social and Ashington are both relegated.

Division 5: Sunderland 3 now need only 4 points from their final match to clinch promotion, following their comprehensive 5-0 (20-4) victory over Tynemouth 5 which put a big dent in Tynemouth's promotion challenge. Primrose 2's narrow 3-2 (15-7) victory against Dunston 2 puts them in a very strong position, 3 points behind second-placed Boldon 2 with a match in hand. Boldon must beat Sunderland in their final match at home on 18th March to stand any chance of finishing above Primrose, who have an easier run-in. Concordia 3 are certainties for the drop but 2nd-bottom Consett 3 still have a chance of overhauling Dunston 2 if they can beat Dunston convincingly away on 13th March and then Concordia away in their final match on 27th March.

Division 6: Northern 6 stretched their winning run to 8 matches with a narrow 3-2 (18-9) win over Boldon 3, to lead the table by 14 points ahead of Chester-le-Street 4, who have a match in hand. Boldon must beat Chester-le-Street at home on 19th March to stand any chance of finishing in the top two. Northern Juniors 2 are relegated and Walker are almost certain to join them.

Division 7: In a fitting climax to the season, Westoe 4 beat Sunderland 4 by 3-2 (18-10) to clinch the Division 7 title by the narrowest of margins - both teams finished level on points, but Westoe had the most match wins, so Sunderland finish as runners-up. Boldon 4 and Hexham 3 are battling for the third spot which may be important as 'you never know' - an extra team may be promoted. In the battle to avoid the wooden spoon, Consett 4 moved 2 points above Dunston 3, who have a match in hand.

Ladies Premier: Tynemouth Ladies 1, having registered back-to-back wins over main rivals Northern Ladies 1A to complete a treble over them for the season, then lost to Northumbria University Ladies 2-3 (9-15) to remain in second place in the table behind Northern 1A, although Tynemouth are only 4 points behind with a match in hand. Tynemouth finish with back-to-back fixtures on 14th and 18th March against Northern Ladies 1B, who are looking to hold on to 3rd place if they can beat Northumbria University Ladies at home on 11th March.

Ladies Division 1: Congratulations to Primrose Ladies who have secured the Division 1 title with a match to spare after a convincing 5-0 (20-3) victory over Northumberland Ladies. Northern Ladies 3 moved 18 points above Northumberland Ladies into the second promotion place but Northumberland have a match in hand. Northern need to beat Northumberland at home by any score on 17th March to secure promotion, but if Northumberland win, they can pick up sufficient points against Hexham away on 24th March to overtake Northern.

Ladies Division 2: Tynemouth Ladies 2 have strengthened their lead over Eldon Leisure Ladies to 11 points with two matches remaining, and their final fixture at Eldon on 27th March looks likely to settle the title. Meanwhile Tynemouth Ladies 3 are now 11 points behind Concordia, and their final fixture at Tynemouth on 23rd March will decide the destination of the wooden spoon.
