Winter League double for Tynemouth!
24 Mar 2019

Tynemouth have recaptured both the Men's and Ladies' Premier titles in the final round of Winter League fixtures.

Here is an update on the latest position at the top and bottom of each division of the leagues, with known positions highlighted and remaining key issues identified as we enter the last phase of the season.

MEN'S PREMIER

Champions - Tynemouth 1

Runners-up - Northern 1

Relegated - Chester-le-Street 1 and either Newbiggin 1 or Northern 2

Congratulations to Tynemouth 1 who have recaptured the Premier title from Newcastle University following a final-match 4-1 (19-8) victory over close rivals Northern 1. Tynemouth, who last held the title in 2015/16, were strengthened this season by the addition of 14-times County champion Dave Barnett at 1, and newcomer Richard Parsons who remained unbeaten throughout. Northern had put Newcastle University 1A out of the running and kept their own slim chances alive with a 4-1 (19-6) win on the night before their decider against Tynemouth, but that still left them 18 points behind Tynemouth who therefore needed to pick up only 3 points to be sure of the title, and eventually collected 19 to Northern's 8 to widen the gap to 29 points. University 1A finished a point behind Northern in third place following their final-match 4-1 (17-7) victory over Northumberland 1, who finish fourth to take the final Northumbria Cup place.

At the bottom, relegated Chester-le-Street 1 will be joined by either Northern 2 or Newbiggin 1. In the final round of matches, Newbiggin have to register at least 7 points away to University 1B on 28th March to make Northern 2 require points when they travel to Northumberland on 4th April.

The top four Premier teams will compete in the Northumbria Cup at Tynemouth with semis on Fri 10th May (7pm) followed by the final on 11th May (5pm).

DIVISION 1

Promoted - Sunderland 1 and either Tynemouth 2 or Northumberland 2

Relegated - Concordia 1 and either Washington or Tynemouth 3

Sunderland 1 completed their successful campaign with a 4-1 (19-3) victory over Tynemouth 3 to confirm promotion back to the Premier. Rivals Tynemouth 2 trounced University 3 by 5-0 (20-1) to move 16 points behind Sunderland with one match remaining. Northumberland 2, who did not play this week, will look to close the 26-point gap on Tynemouth when they host Hexham 1 on 27th March, before Northumberland and Tynemouth meet in their final showdown match at Jesmond on 3rd April to decide the other promotion place, with a win for Tynemouth guaranteeing them promotion, but a Northumberland win then depending on the points margin.

With Concordia 1's withdrawal from the division, the one remaining relegation place is between Tynemouth 3 and Washington. Tynemouth 3 moved 8 points ahead with two matches each remaining. Washington travel to Westoe 2 on 25th March, then Tynemouth 3 travel to University 3 on 26th March, before both teams meet in the deciding match on 4th April at Billy Mill knowing what they need for safety.

DIVISION 2

Promoted - Northern 3 (champions) and either Primrose 1 or Eldon Leisure 1

Relegated - Tynemouth 4 and either Boldon 1 or Benwell Hill

Congratulations to champions Northern 3 who play their final match at home to Boldon 1 on 1st April. Second-placed Primrose 1 finished their campaign with a narrow 3-2 (14-9) win over Northumberland 3 but Eldon Leisure 1 cruised to a 5-0 (20-2) victory over Tynemouth 4 to move within reach of Primrose, and Eldon need 16 points at Benwell Hill on 26th March to take the second promotion slot.

Meanwhile with Tynemouth 4 already relegated, Boldon 1 now look certainties to join them, after their 1-4 (8-18) defeat at the hands of Benwell Hill who have moved 5 points above Boldon with two matches left (at home to Eldon and Tynemouth) to Boldon's one (at champions Northern).

DIVISION 3

Promoted - Westoe 3 and either Northern 4 or Primrose 2

Relegated - Northumberland Ladies and Hexham 2

Westoe 3 are promoted after moving 16 points clear of Northern 4 and 21 points clear of Primrose 2 at the top of the table with wins over Northern Juniors 1 and Consett 1, both by the same scoreline 4-1 (18-6). Northern 4 won 3-2 (18-9) at Newbiggin 2 to move into second place, 5 points ahead of Primrose 2, with all top three teams having one match left. Primrose need maximum points from their trip to relegated Northumberland Ladies on 25th March to put pressure on Northern, whose final fixture is at home to Westoe on 2nd April in a dramatic climax to the season that will settle the promotion and title issues.

Consett 1 finished well clear of danger, ensuring that Hexham 2 are relegated along with Northumberland Ladies.

DIVISION 4

Promoted - Chester-le-Street 3 and Northumberland 4

Relegated - Tynemouth Social and Ashington

Leaders Chester-le-Street 3 concluded their fixtures with a 4-1 (19-3) victory over Eldon Leisure 2, but second-placed Northumberland 4 also won 4-1 (19-4) against Northern 5 to stay just 13 points behind Chester-le-Street with one match remaining, meaning that a win at third-placed Eldon on 25th March will secure the title for Northumberland.

Tynemouth Social and Ashington are both relegated, with Northern 5 safe.

DIVISION 5

Promoted - Sunderland 3 (champions) and either Primrose 3 or Tynemouth 5

Relegated - Concordia 3 and either Consett 3 or Dunston 2

Congratulations to champions Sunderland 3 who finished their campaign with an impressive 4-1 (18-8) victory over Boldon 2, a result which also ended Boldon's slim hopes of promotion. Primrose 3 crushed Concordia 3 by 5-0 (20-2) to move into second place and now need only 2 points from their remaining fixture at Scotezzi on 25th March to confirm promotion ahead of Tynemouth 5, who dropped points in a narrow 3-2 (15-7) win against relegation-threatened Dunston 2 on 23rd March.

Dunston's result at Tynemouth means that Scotezzi are now safe from relegation. Second-bottom Consett 3 also now know that they need 26 points to overhaul Dunston in their final two matches, away to already-relegated Concordia 3 on 27th March and then Tynemouth 5 on 1st April.

DIVISION 6

Promoted - Northern 6 and either Chester-le-Street 4, Boldon 3 or Alnwick

Relegated - Walker and Northern Juniors 2

Northern 6 beat Alnwick 4-1 (17-6) in their final match to secure promotion and all but end Alnwick's slim hopes. Northern lead the table by 35 points ahead of Boldon 3, and although Boldon beat Chester-le-Street 4 by 3-2 (14-10) last week to move into second place one point above Chester-le-Street, Chester-le-Street still have a match in hand on Boldon, at home to relegated Walker on 27th March. Boldon will need maximum points from their final match at Alnwick on 29th March to put any pressure on Chester-le-Street in their final match, also at Alnwick, on 5th April. Even then, Chester-le-Street will need just 22 points from their last two matches for promotion, and 37 points to snatch the title from Northern. Alnwick's number 1 and Player of the Division George Frewing lies in wait for both promotion hopefuls - he hasn't dropped a set yet this season!

Walker and Northern Juniors 2 are relegated, with Newbiggin 3 safe.

DIVISION 7

Promoted - Westoe 4 (champions) and Sunderland 4

Wooden spoon - Consett 4 or Dunston 3

In a fitting climax to the season, Westoe 4 beat Sunderland 4 by 3-2 (18-10) to clinch the Division 7 title by the narrowest of margins - both teams finished level on points, but Westoe had the most match wins, so Sunderland finish as runners-up. Hexham 3 beat Consett 4 last week to move into third place by a point ahead of Boldon 4 with one round of fixtures remaining, hoping to  claim a possible extra promotion place (if available) ahead of Boldon 4 and Northumberland 5.

In the battle to avoid the wooden spoon, Dunston 3 need just one point form their remaining match at home to Hexham to finish above Consett 4.

LADIES PREMIER

Champions - Tynemouth Ladies 1

Runners-up - Northern Ladies 1A

Congratulations to Tynemouth Ladies 1 who secured the Premier title with back-to-back 4-1 victories over Northern Ladies 1B in the space of five days (17-7 and 17-6) to finish 16 points clear of Northern Ladies 1A, who completed their campaign with a 3-2 (14-9) win over Northumbria University Ladies. The progression of Amy and Emma Rowell into the Tynemouth first team ranks this season and the strong performance of Fiona MacFarlane has provided the team with the necessary strength in depth to see them through the campaign.

The four Premier teams will renew their rivalries in the Northumbria Cup at Tynemouth - semi-finals on Thu 9th May (7pm), followed by the final on Sat 11th May (5pm).

LADIES DIVISION 1

Promoted - Primrose Ladies (champions) and either Northumberland Ladies or Northern Ladies 3

Relegated - Hexham Ladies and either Northern Ladies 3 or Northumberland Ladies

Congratulations to Primrose Ladies who won the Division 1 title with a match to spare. But well done also to Hexham Ladies who shattered Primrose's 100% record with a 3-2 (14-7) win at Primrose. Northumberland Ladies beat second-placed Northern Ladies 3 by 4-1 (19-5) to close the gap to 4 points in the battle for the second promotion place, and Northumberland need only those 4 points in their final match against Hexham away on 24th March to overtake Northern and relegate them along with Hexham.

LADIES DIVISION 2

Champions - either Tynemouth Ladies 2 or Eldon Leisure Ladies

Wooden spoon - Tynemouth Ladies 3

Tynemouth Ladies 2 comfortably beat Concordia Ladies to maintain their 11-point lead over Eldon Leisure Ladies, and their final fixture at Eldon on 27th March will settle the title. Meanwhile Concordia beat Tynemouth Ladies 3 in their final fixture at Tynemouth on 23rd March to decide the destination of the wooden spoon.
