Cup Semi-Finals preview
25 Apr 2019

The semi final ties in each of the five Northumbria and League Cup competitions will all be played at Tynemouth Squash Club starting on Thursday 2nd May, then Tuesday 7th to Friday 10th May, followed by the finals on Saturday 11th May. Here are the details in chronological order:

Ladies' League Cup [for Div 1 & 2 teams] - Thu 2nd May (7pm)

  • Northumberland Ladies v Hexham Ladies
  • Northern Ladies 3 v Eldon Leisure Ladies

Based on their league results, current Northumbria Cup holders Northumberland Ladies are favourites, but Hexham Ladies have run them close during the season so must feel they have a chance of reaching the final. Following Primrose Ladies' withdrawal from the tournament, Eldon Leisure Ladies go through as the only remaining Division 2 team, to face Northern Ladies 3.

Men's League Cup B [for Div 4 to 7 teams] - Tue 7th May (7pm)

  • Eldon Leisure 2 v Dunston 2
  • Northumberland 4 v Primrose 3

It's Division 4 v 5 in both semis with Eldon Leisure 2 and champions Northumberland 4 the favourites to progress to the final. However Primrose 3 are confident after winning promotion to Division 4 and Dunston 2 were the giant-killers in the previous round, so you never know.

Men's League Cup A [for Div 1 to 3 teams] - Wed 8th May (7pm)

  • Sunderland 1 v Newcastle University 3
  • Tynemouth 2 v Eldon Leisure 1

Division 1 champions Sunderland 1 are the favourites but Tynemouth 2 are on home territory and are the current cup holders (if anyone could find the cup that is...). Newcastle University 3 were well beaten by Sunderland 1 in the league, both home and away, so they have their work cut out, but Eldon Leisure 1 are in form having just won promotion from Division 2 and provided the shock of the quarter finals knocking out Division 1 runners-up Northumberland 2, so Tynemouth will have to be on their toes.

Ladies' Northumbria Cup [for top 4 Ladies' Premier teams] - Thu 9th May (7pm)

  • Tynemouth Ladies 1 v Northumbria University Ladies
  • Northern Ladies 1A v Northern Ladies 1B

Premier champions Tynemouth Ladies 1 are the cup favourites, although they did lose two out of three matches to Northumbria University Ladies during the season, so this could be a close encounter. In the clash of the Northern Ladies teams, 1A are expected to come out on top, having registered three wins out of three in the league against 1B.

Men's Northumbria Cup [for top 4 Premier teams] - Fri 10th May (7pm)

  • Tynemouth 1 v Northumberland 1
  • Northern 1 v Newcastle University 1A

Premier champions and cup favourites Tynemouth 1 will need to be at their best against Northumberland 1, with National Under 19 champion Max Forster at number 1. Tynemouth wil be relying on their strength in depth to see them through to the final, where the opposing team is anyone's guess - Northern 1 and Newcastle University 1A were separated by a single point in the league table and won one each of their head-to-head clashes, so this one will go to the wire.
