Cup Semi-Finals
10 May 2019

The semi final ties in each of the five Northumbria and League Cup competitions have been completed at Tynemouth Squash Club from Thursday 2nd May to Friday 10th May. The finals will all be held at Tynemouth on Saturday 11th May. Here are the semi-final results:

Ladies' League Cup [for Div 1 & 2 teams] - Thu 2nd May (7pm)

  • Northumberland Ladies beat Hexham Ladies  5-0
  • Northern Ladies 3 beat Eldon Leisure Ladies  5-0

Current Northumbria Cup holders Northumberland Ladies remain favourites, after comfortably defeating Hexham Ladies 5-0 in their semi-final. In the other semi, Eldon Leisure Ladies, the only remaining Division 2 team, went down by a similar scoreline to Northern Ladies 3.

Men's League Cup B [for Div 4 to 7 teams] - Tue 7th May (7pm)

  • Eldon Leisure 2 beat Dunston 2  3-2
  • Primrose 3 beat Northumberland 4  3-2

It was Division 4 v 5 in both semis with Eldon Leisure 2 and Division 4 champions Northumberland 4 the favourites to progress to the final. Dunston 2 nearly pulled off another giant-killing act before Eldon eventually came out on top 3-2, with the crucial 4th string tie going Eldon's way on the sudden-death point in the 5th game. Then in the shock of the night, a strong Primrose 3 team, full of confidence after winning promotion to Division 4, knocked out a somewhat weakened Northumberland 4 by 3-2, making Primrose now perhaps the bookies' favourites to lift the cup.

Men's League Cup A [for Div 1 to 3 teams] - Wed 8th May (7pm)

  • Sunderland 1 beat Newcastle University 3  3-2
  • Tynemouth 2 beat Eldon Leisure 1  5-0

Sunderland 1 narrowly defeated University 3 on the last game of the last tie to go through to the final 3-2. Tynemouth 2 sa off the early threat from Eldon 1 to run out 5-0 winners. Division 1 champions Sunderland will be missing their numbers 1 and 2 for the final against current cup holders Tynemouth 2 who are on home territory, so it makes for an interesting final.

Ladies' Northumbria Cup [for top 4 Ladies' Premier teams] - Thu 9th May (7pm)

  • Tynemouth Ladies 1 beat Northumbria University Ladies  3-2
  • Northern Ladies 1B beat Northern Ladies 1A  w/o

Premier champions and cup favourites Tynemouth Ladies 1 needed wins at 3, 4 and 5 to secure their victory over Northumbria University Ladies who came back to win the top two strings for an overall score of 3-2 in Tynemouth's favour. In the intended clash of the top two Northern Ladies teams, 1A unfortunately withdrew as they were unable to field a team, giving 1B a walkover to play Tynemouth in the final.

Men's Northumbria Cup [for top 4 Premier teams] - Fri 10th May (7pm)

  • Tynemouth 1 beat Northumberland 1  4-1
  • Northern 1 beat Newcastle University 1A  3-2

Despite Northumberland's National Under 19 champion Max Forster beating Dave Barnett at 1, Premier champions and cup favourites Tynemouth proved too strong down the order to see them through to the final 4-1. The other semi between Northern and Newcastle University 1A couldn't have been closer, going to the 5th game of the very last match on court before Northern emerged victorious 3-2 by the narrowest of margins. So the final will be contested by the top two Premier teams, Tynemouth and Northern.
